Getting Started with the DIRECTV®

The following instructions will help you configure your TV Guide On Screen product with DIRECTV. The main processes are:

- Start TV Guide On Screen setup
- Identify your location
- Select DIRECTV as your broadcast service
- Configure a VCR (optional)
- Confirm your settings

Important: After you connect the G-LINK cable and complete TV Guide On Screen setup, power the TV OFF when not in use in order to begin to receive your TV Guide On Screen listings. Within 24 hours, you will begin to receive TV show listings. It may take up to six days to receive the full eight days of initial show listings.

Leave the satellite box ON to ensure you always receive the most updated listings information. It is normal for the box to change channels while the TV is Off and the TV Guide On Screen is setting up or receiving new data.

Note: Currently, DIRECTV High Definition (HD) receivers are not officially supported in the TV Guide On Screen system.

 

Connect the G-LINK Cable

In order for TV Guide On Screen to receive show listings for your DIRECTV service you need to connect the G-LINK cable that was shipped with your product.

1. Connect the G-LINK cable to the G-LINK jack on the back of your product.

2. Locate the IR Sensor on your DIRECTV satellite box. If you cannot visually locate the IR sensor:

a. Turn the satellite box OFF.
b. Hold the satellite box remote so that it touches the front of the satellite box.

c. Move the remote across the front of the satellite box and press the power button ON and OFF as you move the remote. (You must press and release the power button each time you move the remote; do not hold the button down.)

d. Note the location of the remote when the satellite box powers On. This is the location of the IR sensor.

3. Place one of the G-LINK cables underneath the satellite box and ensure the G-LINK wand is approximately one inch in front of the sensor you located in the previous step.

4. Use the double-sided tape to secure the G-LINK wand to the satellite box.

5. If you want to use TV Guide On Screen Listings to schedule recordings to a VCR you will need to repeat this procedure to place the second G-LINK wand in front of the IR sensor on your VCR. For detailed VCR setup instructions, click here.

Complete TV Guide On Screen setup

In order to complete TV Guide On Screen setup you will need to:

  • Press ▲/▼/◄/► to highlight selections.
  • Press OK to select (or clear) the highlighted option.
  • Press INFO to display Help information the setup screen.
  • Naming used for remote control buttons can vary by product, refer to your owner's manual for the specific remote control button used to control TV Guide On Screen's functionality.

Start TV Guide On Screen Setup

If the Welcome or Reminder screen does not appear automatically when you Power On and/or complete setting up your product, press the TV GUIDE button on your remote control.  

Welcome Screen:
Reminder Screen:
Press OK to go to Screen 1.
Press ▲/▼ to highlight “Start setup” and press OK to go to Screen 1.

Identify Your Location

1. Select Country


Follow the on-screen instructions to select your location and go to Screen 2. 

2. Enter ZIP or Postal Code
If your location is USA you see the ZIP Code screen. If your location is Canada, you see the Postal Code screen.


Enter your ZIP or Postal Code and go to Screen 3.

 

Select DIRECTV as your broadcast service

3. Select Service(s)


Select “DIRECTV” and go to Screen 4.
Note:
If you have other video sources connected to your product, select them here.


4. Select Input to Configure Service


Select on which input you connected your DIRECTV service and go to Screen 5.


5. Configure DIRECTV Remote Control


Enter information to let the TV Guide On Screen system know how you change channels with your satellite box remote control. You are asked how you would enter a two-digit, three-digit, and four-digit channel number. Complete each screen and go to Screen 6.


6. Connection Diagram


Verify your connections and go to Screen 7.


7. Select Equipment Brand


Select your satellite box brand and go to Screen 8. Note: Click here for a list of compatible DIRECTV satellite receivers. Currently, DIRECTV High Definition (HD) receivers are not officially supported in the TV Guide On Screen system.


8. Instruction Screen


Follow the on-screen instructions. When you press OK the Guide tests the remote control code. When the test is complete, the Guide automatically displays Screen 9.

9. Confirm Tuning Complete


Select your answer:
• “Yes” – opens Screen 10 or, if applicable, the initial setup screen for the next service you selected in Screen 3.
• “No” – Guide tests an alternate code.
• “Test this code again” – Guide retests current code.

Note: You may need to test several codes.

 

Setup Screens: Confirm Your Settings

10. Check Setup


Select your answer:
• “Yes, continue setup process” – opens Screen 11.

Note
:
If your product enables TV Guide On Screen to control recordings to an external VCR, when you select this option you will be asked whether or not you would like to use TV Guide On Screen to control recordings to your VCR. If you select Yes, follow the on-screen instructions to configure your VCR, or click here for detailed configuration information. If you select No, you will see Screen 11.
• “No, repeat setup process” – returns to Screen 1

11. Helpful Information


Review the information and press OK to close setup and watch TV.
