- Q: How do I verify the software version on my DISH 311satellite receiver?
Answer: Your satellite receiver downloads software updates when it is left powered On in standby mode. To verify your satellite receiver has the latest software:
1. Using your DISH remote, press MENU.
The Main Menu appears.
2. From the Main Menu, press MENU again.
The System Info – One screen appears
3. In Box “d,” confirm the software version P310 or higher (for example, P311, P312, P313, etc.)
a. If an appropriate software version is displayed, press CANCEL to close the screen.
b. If any other software version is listed, proceed to step 4.
4. Leave your satellite receiver powered On overnight, or while not in use. This enables the satellite receiver to download the latest DISH Network software version. Once the receiver has been left in standby mode, repeat the previous steps until the appropriate software version is displayed in Box “d” of the System Info screen.
- Q: Why do I need to verify the software version on my DISH satellite receiver?
Answer: Initially, not all Echostar satellite receivers had software to support the protocol that allows recording to external recording devices. Echostar has since updated the software on your satellite receiver to allow it to communicate with the external recording devices, including your TV Guide On Screen-enabled recorder.
- Q: How do I schedule a recording with DISH Network™?
Answer: Before you can record with your DISH satellite receiver you must
- Verify your DISH satellite receiver has the latest software (see Question 1)
- Verify your DISH satellite receiver is connected to the appropriate video input on your recorder (see the setup instructions in the owner’s manual for your recorder)
- Verify TV Guide On Screen is set up for DISH Network service (see
Getting Started).
You can schedule recordings using the DISH program guide or DISH menus.
To schedule a recording with the DISH program guide:
1. Using your DISH remote, press GUIDE to display the DISH program guide.
2. Highlight a show that is not currently airing and press SELECT.
The Create Timer screen appears.
3. Move to Timer Type, highlight “Auto/Ext” and press SELECT.
Note: If “Auto/Ext” is not an option for Timer Type, your satellite receiver does not have the latest software, see Question 1.
4. Move to Timer Frequency, highlight the recording frequency you want and press SELECT.
5. Highlight “Create” and press SELECT.

6. Tune your recorder to the input in which you have your DISH Network service.

To schedule a manual recording using DISH menus:
1. Using your DISH remote, press MENU.
2. From the Main Menu, press 7 to select “7 Timers.”
3. In the Timers screen, highlight “Create” and press SELECT.
4. Move to Timer Type, highlight “Auto/Ext” and press SELECT.

Note: If “Auto/Ext” is not an option for Timer Type, your satellite receiver does not have the latest software, see Question 1.
5. Move to Timer Frequency, highlight the recording frequency you want and press SELECT.

d. If your recording frequency is “Weekly” you will also need to select the day of the week.
8. After you have entered all necessary information in the Set Day/Time screen, highlight “Create Timer” and press SELECT.

Answer: The TV Guide On Screen Recordings screen lists all recorded shows. You can highlight a title and press OK to start playback. Alternately, you can highlight the title and press MENU to choose to play the recording from the beginning or resume playback of a show you previously started to watch.
Note: Not all recorders support the TV Guide On Screen Recording service. If your unit does not support this service, use the recorder’s main menus to view completed recordings.
d. Delete a recorded show?
Answer: The TV Guide On Screen Recordings screen lists all recorded shows. You can highlight a title, press MENU, and choose “delete episode” to delete a specific recording.
Note: Not all recorders support the TV Guide On Screen Recording service. If your unit does not support this service, use the recorder’s main menus to view completed recordings.
- Q: Can I use the Record button on the remote control to start a recording?
Answer: If supported by your device, you can use the recorder’s remote to start an instant recording. These recordings may not be listed in the TV Guide On Screen system. For more information refer to your recorder’s owner manual.
- If TV Guide On Screen one-touch recording features are supported by your device, the recording stops at the end of the half-hour time slot in which the recording was initiated. However, if you initiate a recording within two minutes of the hour (:00) or half-hour (:30) the recording continues through the next half-hour time slot.
- If you have connected a VCR through your DISH system, you can use your DISH remote to initiate one-touch recording. For more information, refer to your satellite receiver owner’s manual.
- Q: Can I use TV Guide On Screen to schedule a recording?
Answer: Yes, you can use the TV Guide On Screen manual recording feature to schedule recordings. These recordings will not be listed in the DISH Active event timer menu. If you connected an alternate recording device to an additional broadcast input (such as antenna or cable) on your recorder you can also use this feature to schedule recordings to that device. At the time of the recording, the recorder records the channel that is currently airing on the input you specified for the recording.
1. Using your recorder’s remote, press GUIDE to open TV Guide On Screen.
2. Highlight Schedule, press the DOWN arrow button (and LEFT or RIGHT arrow buttons) to highlight “To Do.”
3. Press MENU.
4. In Schedule Options menu, highlight “new manual recording” and press OK.

Answer: No. Your recorder will power On automatically for a scheduled recording.
- Q: Does the satellite receiver have to be powered On at the scheduled recording time?

Answer: Yes, to make most of the TV Guide On Screen features you should leave your satellite receiver powered On at all times.
- Q: Can I watch another show while recording on the DISH input?
Answer: No. TV Guide On Screen displays an alert if you try to switch inputs while a recording is in progress. If the alert displays, use your recorder’s remote to choose between “don’t change; keep recording” and “change; stop recording.”
